Can FIGMENT bring a city together? FIGMENT Executive Producer David Koren recently stopped by Jackson, Mississippi to gauge local interest in expanding FIGMENT to Mississippi’s capital. Jackson is a smaller venue than New York or Boston, meaning FIGMENT could have an outsize impact here, even in its first year.
A group of roughly 40 attended Koren’s presentation and immediately embraced FIGMENT’s philosophy. FIGMENT’s ties to Burning Man and egalitarian spirit resonate in Jackson, where a costumed St. Patrick’s Day Parade draws some of the biggest crowds all year. Jackson has …

You thought FIGMENT NYC was big enough? 2010 was also the year FIGMENT Boston sprang to life. The Boston event was run by a dedicated team of entirely local volunteers, sharing resources and support from the experienced team in New York City. This is a huge step in an exciting new direction in the evolution of FIGMENT!
In its first year, FIGMENT Boston was co-located with the corporately sponsored Cambridge River Festival on Saturday, June 5, 2010. The two events operated jointly with the help of the Cambridge Arts Council and …

2010 was a big year for FIGMENT. Not only did nearly 25,000 people find their way to Governors Island NYC to be a part of FIGMENT NYC; over the summer an estimated 200,000 visitors to the island played our Minigolf Course and enjoyed our Sculpture Garden. To top all that, 2010 saw the first FIGMENT event outside of New York, in Boston. FIGMENT is definitely growing up.
On Friday June 11, FIGMENT began its three day takeover of Governors Island. Nearly 25,000 participants engaged with more than 400 art projects set …

It’s been a great summer for FIGMENT on Governors Island, with nearly 25,000 people coming out for the FIGMENT weekend in June, and perhaps as many as 200,000 visiting FIGMENT Terrace, playing minigolf and interacting with the sculpture garden over the summer… Now it’s time to put all our toys away… and begin dreaming up ways to make FIGMENT 2011 even bigger and better!

In Friday’s Weekend section of The New York Times, Edward Rothstein wrote a fairly evenhanded story about Governors Island as “A Playground for the Arts.” As a follow-up, Ken Johnson contributed a dismissive and offensive post on the Times blog. In his critique, Johnson manages to miss the point entirely. The art on Governors Island isn’t for him. This is art for the rest of us.

Thanks to everyone who made FIGMENT such an amazing success… to all of our artists, team members, volunteers, and participants who came out in Boston and New York and made FIGMENT happen! We had nearly 25,000 participants in New York from June 11-13, interacting with 400 art projects, and approximately 10,000 participants in Boston interacting with nearly 100 art projects! Please help us balance our books for 2010 and plan for the future!

When our group got together to start FIGMENT in 2007, we never had any idea that it could ever grow this much, this fast. In 2010, our three-day NYC event had nearly 25,000 participants, and our Boston event, just in its first year, had something like 10,000 participants. It’s really amazing to see how quickly the community around FIGMENT has grown, and it’s exciting to see where it can go next.
FIGMENT began in New York in 2007 as a way to bring three important …
