Can FIGMENT bring a city together? FIGMENT Executive Producer David Koren recently stopped by Jackson, Mississippi to gauge local interest in expanding FIGMENT to Mississippi’s capital. Jackson is a smaller venue than New York or Boston, meaning FIGMENT could have an outsize impact here, even in its first year.
A group of roughly 40 attended Koren’s presentation and immediately embraced FIGMENT’s philosophy. FIGMENT’s ties to Burning Man and egalitarian spirit resonate in Jackson, where a costumed St. Patrick’s Day Parade draws some of the biggest crowds all year. Jackson has …

You thought FIGMENT NYC was big enough? 2010 was also the year FIGMENT Boston sprang to life. The Boston event was run by a dedicated team of entirely local volunteers, sharing resources and support from the experienced team in New York City. This is a huge step in an exciting new direction in the evolution of FIGMENT!

In Friday’s Weekend section of The New York Times, Edward Rothstein wrote a fairly evenhanded story about Governors Island as “A Playground for the Arts.” As a follow-up, Ken Johnson contributed a dismissive and offensive post on the Times blog. In his critique, Johnson manages to miss the point entirely. The art on Governors Island isn’t for him. This is art for the rest of us.
