FIGMENT NYC: WHAT TO BRING

FIGMENT offers an alternative to the traditional art scene in New York, using interaction and collaboration as tools for wild creativity, and being completely free and open to the public. Before you come to Governors Island to participate in FIGMENT, we highly recommend that you read more about the event.

FIGMENT NYC is Friday, June 11 from 10 am – 5 pm, and Saturday and Sunday June 12 and 13 from 10 am – 7 pm. The FIGMENT Minigolf Course and Sculpture Garden are open through mid-October.

Before you start packing your bags, here are three things you might want to glance at on our website:

1. Getting there: Governors Island is now easily reachable by a free ferry from lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. All the ferry information is on our Getting There page.

2. Map: We will have maps of FIGMENT art and activities in kiosks around Governors Island, but you may want to look at the map before you come (FIGMENT 2010 NYC maps will be posted on our website in late May). Because we are a Leave-no-trace event, we will not print individual maps for participants. If you are more comfortable with a map in your hand, you may want to print it out.

3. Schedule & Project/Artist list: You can sort through a list of artwork and activities by day or type of project on our website (FIGMENT 2010 project information will be posted in May).

WHAT TO BRING
Remember to bring anything that you might need for the day. There are no stores on Governors Island. The Island does have medical facilities, porta-potties/restrooms, and a few snack carts.

Here are a list of things to consider bringing:

  • Drinking water – There is very limited potable water on the Island so remember to bring enough for a hot summer day
  • Food, snacks, and anything else you want for a picnic* Sun protection – Sunscreen, a floppy hat or parasol, and sunglasses
  • Any necessary medications
  • Costumes – FIGMENT is the perfect time to play make-believe (for both kids & adults!)
  • Bicycles or rollerskates – There is a wonderful bike path on the Island, and having wheels makes it easy to get around. (But the Island is very walkable and there is a tram for people who prefer to travel that way.)
  • Toys – Kites, hula hoops, poi, croquet sets, knitting, water guns, games… anything that you want to play with or invite others to join you in!

Here are a list of things that are prohibited–please do NOT bring them:

  • Glass containers
  • Grills
  • Dogs or other pets (you will be turned away before you board the ferry if you try to bring your dog unless it is a registered service animal)
  • Cars (during FIGMENT weekend, vehicle traffic on the Island is limited to those who have advance permission)
  • Alcohol
  • Weapons
  • Anything that is not legal to have in public in New York City

BRINGING YOUR ART
We invite you to bring your art, performance, or artistic endeavors… and hope that you will take advantage of FIGMENT as a creative outlet for your work.

However, please note that you cannot bring anything that needs to be staked into the ground, be connected to a power source, plotted on the map, or scheduled for a stage or performance area unless your project is registered with FIGMENT. The submissions deadline for projects is May 1. Submit your project here.
