FIGMENT April Newsletter: It's Warming Up!

It finally feels like spring! Summer and FIGMENT will be here before we know it! We're pleased to announce the winner of the 2011 City of Dreams Pavilion Competition (produced by FIGMENT, ENYA, and SEAoNY), the projects to be installed in the 2011 FIGMENT Sculpture Garden, and the 2011 FIGMENT Minigolf Course. We hope to have all of these projects up and running for the entire season on Governors Island, from May 27 to September 25.

But we're still working to close our budget gap to make all of these projects happen this summer, as well as our FIGMENT events in NYC, Boston, Detroit, and Jackson, Mississippi. So, if you like what you see, and if you like what we're planning, please make a donation of any amount to help us make it all happen! And, once you do, you'll see your name on our new supporters page!

The 2011 City of Dreams Pavilion: Burble Bup

The City of Dreams Pavilion Competition 2011 has a winner! The competition jury has selected the sustainable design of Bittertang's Burble Bup to be installed on Governors Island for the summer 2011 season as a temporary central gathering and assembly point for arts and cultural activity on the island. Design 'farm' Bittertang envisioned strangers lounging and mingling within Burble Bup's earthen walls, laying down and feeling comfortable underneath constantly shifting colored light. Under Burble Bup's colorfully inflatable roof, visitors are enticed to stay, mingling among new friends and upon plush soil tubes.

Make a tax-deductible donation to help us install Burble Bup!

The City of Dreams Pavilion Competition is jointly produced by FIGMENT, The Emerging New York Architects Committee of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (ENYA), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY).

FIGMENT 2011 Sculpture Garden

The FIGMENT summer long sculpture garden on Governors Island has been a huge success since its conception 3 years ago. This year, out of over 50 submissions, FIGMENT has selected 16 amazingly creative, interactive, and sustainable sculpture projects that - pending fundraising and approvals from the Trust for Governors Island and other relevant city agencies - will find a temporary home on Governor Island. In the FIGMENT Terrace Sculpture Garden, these highly interactive sculpture projects will be open and free for the public to enjoy while the island is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from May 27 to September 25, 2011.

See all 16 selected projects for 2011.

FIGMENT 2011 Minigolf Course: "Bugs and Features"

The FIGMENT Minigolf Course has returned to Governors Island in 2011 with 14 holes: twelve new ones and two returning holes from previous years. This year, the course is built around Bugs and Features. FIGMENT is giving its own participatory and inspired twist to the unknown and fascinating world of bugs - both the creepy crawly and the technological variety. We hope to provide a place where man and bug can putt away in harmony. The FIGMENT Minigolf Course will be open and free for the public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from May 27 to September 25.

Please help us realize all 14 minigolf holes by making a donation to FIGMENT!
